Doctor loses reinstatement bid

From the Northern Echo, first published Saturday 3rd Nov 2001.

A DISGRACED anaesthetist is to remain struck-off after a series of disastrous blunders.

Brian Hendley, 50, assured the General Medical Council's professional conduct committee in London he would never apply for jobs in the field of anaesthetics.

He was making an application to be restored to the medical register after being struck off in May last year for serious professional misconduct at three hospitals, including Newcastle's Freeman Hospital.

Mr Hendley first appeared before the committee accused of serious professional misconduct for his treatment of a patient at the Freeman on January 3, 1996.

He admitted failing to tell the surgeon the patient had developed mottled blue fingers, indicating a circulatory difficulty.

He had also failed to complete his anaesthetic chart properly, which had lead to complications.

The patient had to undergo amputation of the thumb and fingers on her right hand.

Mr Hendley, formerly of Lewisham, London, was also found to have made mistakes in hospitals in East London and Surrey.

Yesterday, the committee decided it would not be safe for Mr Hendley's name to be restored to the Medical Register and rejected his application.

Announcing the decision, committee chairman Douglas Gentleman said it had considered his previous failings to be very serious indeed.

He added: "In spite of what it has been told, it remains concerned by your apparent limited insight into those failings and by your belief that you would be fit to pursue other careers in medicine."

Having considered all the submissions the committee rejected the application.
