Cubs and beavers chip away for jubilee

From the Northern Echo, first published Friday 8th Mar 2002.

Cubs and Beavers have been using their creative skills to raise money for the Queen's golden jubilee.

The children joined members of the 2nd Bishop Auckland Scouts at Bishop Auckland College to make wooden bird boxes.

The woodwork session will also help the cubs to gain their handyman badges.

Bishop Auckland MP Derek Foster joined the youngsters as they worked.

He praised the result of their efforts, which will be sold for £5 each.

He said: "It is great to see the way youngsters respond so enthusiastically to imaginative leadership.''

Money raised from the day, which was jointly organised by the college and the Scouts, will go towards buying golden jubilee souvenirs for the youngsters as keepsakes.
