Samaritan aids victim of robbery

From the Northern Echo, first published Tuesday 22nd Jan 2002.

A PASSER-by came to the rescue of a pizza delivery man during a robbery on Saturday night.

Police said yesterday that the good Samaritan's intervention, in Half Moon Lane, Spennymoor, probably saved the 47-year-old victim from serious injury.

The driver was doing a midnight delivery when he was approached by a man carrying an iron bar.

He handed over cash to the man, who was in his mid-20s, had dark, short hair, was about 5ft 10in and of medium build. He wore dark clothes.

Detective Constable Steve McLean said: "Fortunately he was not hurt, but he was badly shaken. If the other man had not come along at the right time, he could have been badly hurt."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Newton Aycliffe police, on (01325) 314401.
