Insight into the life of a poet

KEVIN Cadwallender, poet-in-residence for Durham County Council, will be appearing at Bishop Auckland Town Hall tomorrow. Mr Cadwallender, who comes from Sunderland, will discuss how he became a writer, his other careers, and will read some of his poems. This is a free event, but entry is by ticket only. CERTIFICATE GAIN: Sunderland workers are celebrating the New Year with new career opportunities, having successfully achieved the certificate of management. Staff at City Contracting Services completed the Stairway Programme, which gives employees the chance to broaden their expertise, knowledge and skills, resulting in a national qualification.

APPEAL DECISION: South Tyneside Council will not challenge the outcome of a planning appeal which has ruled in favour of plans to redevelop the site of the Old Smith Tea Rooms, in South Shields. Following a public inquiry, a planning inspector allowed the appeal against the council's decision to refuse permission to demolish the building, in East Smith Street. The plans will provide a cafe and amusement centre.

QUALITY MARK: The District of Easington's housing management section has been awarded the Community Legal Service Quality Mark Standard for Assisted Information. The unit was assessed on seven key areas, including client information and case management.

OUTREACH SESSIONS: Durham Citizens' Advice Bureau is holding outreach sessions today, at Bowburn Community Centre from 11am to noon, tomorrow at Ushaw Moor Community House between 10am and 11am, and on Thursday in Esh Winning Community Centre between 1.30pm and 2.30pm.

PAINTING COURSE: A 12-week watercolour painting course starts today at The Arts Centre, Biddick Lane, Fatfield, Washington. Classes for beginners are from 11am to 1pm with intermediate classes held from 2pm and 4pm and 7pm and 8pm. The course costs £40. Further details on 0191-219 3455.

PHOTO TALK: John Tyrrell and Robin Wallace will give a presentation when Durham Photographic Society meets on Thursday at 7.30pm in the Shakespeare Hall, North Road, Durham.

MUSIC TALK: Monica Flook will give a presentation called Peacock of the Podium when Durham Recorded Music Society meets tomorrow at Alington House, North Bailey, Durham, starting at 7pm. Admission costs £1.

Art display: Work by the Age Concern art class, at Easington Colliery, will be on show at The Discovery Centre, Seaton Holme, Easington Village, from Wednesday, January 30 to February 27.
