Catwalk chance for pupils

SCHOOL pupils have tried their hand at fashion design to help out a new label aimed at the 15 to 25-year-old market.

A number of 15 and 16-year-old girls, from Durham High School, designed a range of outfits for a ball or prom, to be sold around the country by up-and-coming North-East designers Courtly Gold. They then staged their own fashion show.

Marion Thomas, head of the upper school, said: "This was the first time our students had taken part in such a venture and it was hugely rewarding to see them work together to put on such a good show.

"Between them, they provided the models, make-up and hair, music, choreography, compered and also sold tickets to fellow students and parents.

"The night was a resounding success and they have learnt a great deal from the experience."

The co-directors of Courtly Gold, Jennifer Hayes and Tracey Ewins, chose two winners: Sarah Porter, of Coxhoe, and Sophie Cronin, of Witton Gilbert, who between them designed a sequined black bodice and full-length skirt with rich purple lining.

A total of £186 was raised for Breast Cancer Awareness.
