AN east Cleveland woman has become a North-East Skills for Life Champion and will help improve standards of adult literacy and maths throughout the region.
Lisa Kiely, Skills for Life co-ordinator at Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, will join the Get On North-East campaign to help raise awareness of the issue, which affects 400,000 adults across the North-East.
The campaign, which aims to improve essential life skills among adults who have difficulties with reading, writing and basic maths, aims to encourage them to achieve skills for life qualifications.
It also aims to improve the quality and quantity of training available and to promote the importance of literacy and maths on the lives and prospects of individuals.
Ms Kiely, who will focus on improving standards throughout the Tees Valley area, said: "It is vital for the whole regional economy that we have the highest possible standards of literacy and numeracy across the region.
"I am convinced that the resources and the team working to improve the essential life skills of people here in the Tees Valley are going to make a real difference to the lives of thousands of people."
There are a wide range of free skills-for-life courses in reading, writing and maths available at centres across the region.
Courses can either be taken in one of the learning centres or over the Internet.
Anyone who would like to find out more about improving literacy and numeracy skills can find out what is available in their local area by calling the Get On Campaign line on (0800) 100 900.
