Passer-by stole purse after woman hit by bus

A CALLOUS thief stole the handbag of woman as she lay in the road having been knocked down by a bus.The 58-year-old victim was involved in the accident in Westgate Road, Newcastle. But as she lay in agony with a serious leg injury, passer-by Kayleigh Leanne Trainer took her opportunity and stole the woman's bag, containing several hundred pounds.Trainer, 21, even lingered after the emergency services arrived, pretending to help.Chief Inspector Mick Lillico, of Northumbria Police, said: "This was a despicable theft, which really shows the worst side of human nature."A woman is left with serious injuries in the road and someone else has taken advantage of the situation for their own gain."The woman, who has not been named but is from Carlisle, is still in Newcastle General Hospital recovering from her injuries. A spokesman said last night she was in a poorly, but stable, condition.Police only found out about the theft when they returned her possessions to the victim's family, who noticed her handbag was missing.Officers from motor patrols in Newcastle investigated and, after studying CCTV footage, arrested Trainer at her home in Crowhall Towers, Felling, Gateshead. She pleaded guilty to theft when she appeared before Newcastle magistrates on Monday.Chief Insp Lillico praised officers for their work in bringing the thief to justice. He added: "The quick and proactive police investigation has led to the culprit being caught quickly and put before the courts."Magistrates adjourned the case for sentence and released Trainer on bail.Police are making a fresh appeal for witnesses to the collision, which happened at 5.35pm last Wednesday.   more...
